Welcome to the Department of Visual Arts, within the School of Visual and Performing Arts in the Faculty of Humanities. We have a long and proud history, with our roots in South Africa's oldest art school, the Port Elizabeth Art School founded in 1882.

We offer a comprehensive range of programmes from the Bachelor of Visual Arts right up to a Masters of Visual Arts. In all programmes students receive group and individual tuition from highly skilled staff who are often active practitioners in their fields.

Visual Art encompasses the following discipline streams:


The Bachelor of Visual Arts First Year is compulsory for students wishing to major in any Visual Arts discipline stream.

Over the years students from the school have been award winners in a wide range of top national and international fine art, design and photography competitions. Our graduates have gone on to make valuable cultural contributions in their fields.

The Department of Visual Arts is primarily located on the North Campus, Port Elizabeth while Fashion & Textiles degree is offered on the 2nd Avenue Campus, Port Elizabeth and postgraduate students are located on the Bird Street Campus.
